In the August 2021 survey, NETCRAFT received responses from 1,211,444,849 sites covering 263,733,974 separate domains and 11,327,711 Web-facing computers. Based on the survey, 4.99 million sites have disappeared, but 1.64 million domains and 67,600 computers have grown.
This month, the number of unique domain names supported by Nginx Web servers increased by more than 1 million, while the number of Apache dropped by 916,000. This marketing share cemented Nginx’s lead, giving it 29.8% of the market compared to Apache’s 25.5%.
OpenResty added 234,000 domains but held its market share at 14.5 percent, while Cloudflare added 726,000 domains and increased its market share to 7.72 percent.
The number of Nginx computers continues to grow, increasing by 49,000 (1.18%) this month. There are now 4.19 million networked computers using Nginx, compared to 3.52 million using Apache. Microsoft ranked third with 1.38 million PCS.
The Network-oriented computing metric has shown a very steady trend over the past few years. Both Microsoft and Apache steadily declined, while Nginx has steadily climbed, passing Microsoft for the first time in 2017 and Apache in 2020. Other web servers are also growing steadily, including Nginx-based derivatives such as OpenResty and Tengine.
Information about other suppliers and hosting sites
- Microsoft (MSFT) has announced that Azure Government Top Secret will be fully available. The new AIR-GAPPED Azure Regions was designed to handle top-secret U.S. national-security work.
- Microsoft also announced new Azure Healthcare APIs that help manage health information data.
- Statistics collected by Azure DDoS Protection show a shift in attacks against Web applications in the first half of 2021.
- Apache Tomcat 10.0.10 was released on August 5, Tomcat 10.1.0-M4 (alpha) and Tomcat 9.0.52 were released on August 6, and Tomcat 8.5.70 was released on August 16. All four versions correct the error regression of HTTP/2 traffic control in previous versions.
- OpenResty 1.19.9.1 was released on August 6. This release is based on the Web platform of Nginx and LuaJIT, with Nginx 1.19.9 (mainline release on March 30) as the core and includes some LuaJIT patches.
Websites in Afghanistan
Taliban offensives in Afghanistan can disrupt the country’s Internet infrastructure, but the extent of any change is likely to be limited. Afghanistan has had a relatively small presence on the web for the past two decades. Many of its websites are already hosted abroad and use GTLDS to avoid Taliban interference.
This month’s survey found that only 8,031 websites were based in Afghanistan, with 23,205 using Afghan ones. Af country-code top-level domain (ccTLD). More than two-thirds of the latter hosts are in the United States, and more than 2,000 are in Germany — despite any reliance on. The af domain’s website is still vulnerable to disruption if the country’s new government so wishes.
Af for nearly 1,000 Afghan government websites belong to the.gov.af secondary domain — such as president.gov.af and Animus.gov.af — still, surprisingly, less than half of these are hosted in Afghanistan, along with others hosted in the United States, Germany, Singapore, France, Canada, The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Ireland LAN and India.
Even more surprising, dozens are based in the United States and Germany. In addition, Gov.af was used to provide a webmail service, potentially making Afghan government communications more accessible to outside intelligence agencies.
